Meaghan Westfall - Contemporary Artist

Headshot2020.png

Bio

Meaghan Westfall grew up in South Carolina and received her BFA in Sculpture and Printmaking from Winthrop University. She is fascinated by colored lights, concrete, cocoons, poetry, viscous and oddly textured materials, and small found objects. She plans to attend graduate school in pursuit of an MFA in Sculpture. Her sculptural work is an exploration of the connections between emotions, time, and memory. Her two-dimensional work puts familiar imagery in an unfamiliar context to uncover the personal importance of certain forms as well as the expectations that come with one's identity.

Artist Statement

The aim of my work is to strike a balance between my ideal world and reality. Initially, my sculptural work revolved solely around the emotions of others. Eventually, I was able to express my own feelings. I began to use concrete forms to represent time and memories, while using colored light to generate an environment that simulated my own head space. By doing this, I anchored the intangible to tangibility in an attempt to connect with the viewer through the marriage of light and material. My two dimensional work explores the same ideas through a different lens, and on a more abstract level. Solid forms are substituted by numbers and geometric forms, and the radiant light becomes planes of color.
